Relational Communication

Relational Communication is an interactive look at workplace communication with the DISC behavior assessment. The seminar is packed with powerful information, but stays engaging and laughter-filled at every turn. After a brief introduction to DISC and its four leadership styles, participants will take the test and score their results.

Next, participants will explore their behavior assessment results through a short presentation about the four behavior styles, and through moderated brainstorming as audience members share and discuss the implications of their results. Participants should come away from this discussion with an understanding of their own leadership styles, and the included strengths and weaknesses. They will also have learned about the other three DISC styles from their fellow participants’ self-discovery process.

 

The seminar will then flow seamlessly into the next phase: how the different styles interact with one another.  Audience volunteers will respond to hypothetical workplace situations. The audience will analyze volunteers’ responses based on their DISC types. A guided discussion will lead to the discovery that poor communication, springing from differences in DISC leadership styles, is the cause of many office conflicts.

Finally, through humorous examples, pertinent story-telling, and plenty of guided brainstorming, the audience will learn to tailor their communication for the listener. Participants will learn that, with a little effort, they can reach every DISC type in its own communication style.

In a longer seminar, this segment will include a four-group audience breakout session by leadership style. Each group will solve workplace problems together, and participants will learn from the diverging responses. Audience members will come away from this seminar with the powerful tools to adapt their communication to every leadership style in the workplace.

Gary Parks is the founder and principal of People First Executive Consultants. He has more than two decades of experience leading conflict resolution, facilitating better communication, and improving interpersonal relationships. His background as a pastor grants him unique insight into relationships and how they function, while his years of experience as a DISC trainer and counselor have taught him about behavioral and leadership styles.
